Northwest University Scholars
Unique Mentorship Program Puts Youth on Path to Success
Studies show that one-third of dropouts in Philadelphia leave their studies by the ninth grade. To meet this challenge, Foundations, Inc.—with support from the Lenfest Foundation—instituted the Northwest University Scholars project.
The three-year project aims to keep seventh, eighth and ninth graders successfully engaged in school and on track toward graduation and productive adult lives.
Northwest University Scholars provides a wealth of new resources to 250 area youth, including:
- Mentoring
- Afterschool and summer programs
- Employment and entrepreneurship programs
- College-related experiences
In a unique arrangement, positive community role models serve as mentors for three years, giving students long-term academic and social support.
Project partners include local universities and business groups that support students and encourage them to succeed in ninth grade, graduate from high school and gain the knowledge, skills and aspirations to go to college.
