Building Pathways to Excellence in Washington State

Foundations’ Center for Afterschool Education has worked on a project led by Seattle-based Schools Out Washington (SOWA) to develop and implement an on-site coaching model to better support children and youth in their afterschool programs.

Known as Pathway to Excellence, the model combines in-person training, coaching and online support to help program sites apply new methods to their practice.

Serving as content experts, Foundations has conducted a series of trainings on supporting English Language Learners in afterschool—an area of critical focus for SOWA. At the last two SOWA afterschool conferences, Foundations facilitated key project participant meetings. Following the conferences, we developed content for online support, monitored online discussions and guided Pathway Coaches in their of support providers who implement what they learned at the conference.
